Leading a Life of Influence – SSAA Women in the Spotlight
As our SSAA three-part International Women’s Day series draws to a close, it’s important to reflect on the incredible women who have made significant contributions to the self storage industry in Australia and New Zealand. If you’ve been in and around the industry for some time, you’re sure to know a few. From facility managers to executives and CEOs, our guest contributors have shown immense dedication and commitment to their roles, inspiring others along the way. We wanted to highlight their stories of success as they continue to expand their spheres of influence.
Catherine Moyle, Marketing Manager at Storman, shared that one of her proudest career achievements was proposing and implementing a business case to modernise Storman’s marketing technology stack. This project not only showcased her skills but also demonstrated that her input was valued and sought after.
Louise Stokes, Head of Digital at Swift Storage, stated, “One of my proudest career achievements is being a key part of the small team that created our cutting-edge brand, Swift Storage.” Her effort has paid off with six thriving stores in Queensland (with more to come) and many satisfied customers.
Apryl Hawker, manager of Stax of Storage, was honoured to accept the SSAA Manager of the Year award at the SSAA Awards for Excellence in 2022 and feels energised for another busy year ahead.
Sonja Becke, National Sales Manager at VISY Boxes and More, shared her pride in supporting the growth and processes of the self storage market on both national and international levels, forging long-lasting and respectful business relationships along the way.
Carolyn Provera of Griffith Self Storage built her company from 18 units to a thriving business with over 300 units, all while raising three children. She is proud of the positive feedback she receives from customers, who enjoy using their facility.
Caroline Plowman, CEO of National Mini Storage, is most proud of bringing her team together as one cohesive unit through the ONE TEAM initiative, with shared goals and values across all National Mini Storage locations.
Suzanne Lasenby, manager of Storage4You, spoke about her pride in the initiatives she has implemented to grow the business and support the community. Suzanne explained, “Every time we received a 5 star Google review I know I am doing my job right. Bet you’re going to Google us now to see how many 5-star reviews we have!” Suzanne reflected on starting full-time work again in her late 40s, new to the self storage industry. Despite having an incredible skillset behind her, she was confronted with having no formal training in computer programmes, customer service and accounting. Suzanne persevered and learned through observation, Googling, and attending courses and conferences and has since thrived in her management role.
Liz Davies, CEO of Self Storage Australia, has had two successful roles in the self storage space. First, as a voluntary committee member and later as President and Life Member of the Self Storage Association of Australasia, where Liz set out around Australia to establish national member state meetings. Second, as CEO of Self Storage Australia, where she presold 25% of their first storage centre before construction even began and oversaw expansion into South Australia. Liz’s proudest moment is always the present, as she reflects on her staff’s achievements and the peace of mind they provide hundreds of customers with their exceptional facilities and service.
As we celebrate the incredible women in the self storage industry, their advice, achievements, and inspirations show that determination, hard work, and collaboration are key to success. Their contributions have made a significant impact on the industry, and their messages for International Women’s Day inspire us all to work together, keep building each other up, and never stop learning and growing.
