As winter draws near, it’s time for boat owners to prep for the off-season! Here’s a handy checklist to pass onto your customers, helping them keep their vessels in tip-top shape:

Clean and Inspect:  Before storing your boat, ensure it’s clean inside and out. Remove any dirt, debris, or marine growth from the hull, deck, and engine. Give it a good pressure wash and be sure to vacuum the inside. Inspect for damage like cracks, dents, or corrosion, and promptly address any issues to prevent further damage during storage.

Drain and Winterise:  Properly draining and winterising your boat is essential to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Drain the engine, water tanks, and plumbing systems to remove any remaining water. Add an appropriate antifreeze to the engine’s cooling system and fuel stabiliser to the fuel tank to prevent corrosion and fuel degradation. Use an anti-corrosion spray on metal parts.

Battery Maintenance: To preserve the battery during storage, fully charge it and disconnect it from the boat. Store it in a cool, dry place away from extreme temperatures and consider using a battery maintainer to keep it charged.

When preparing to use the boat again, reconnect the battery, inspect all components, and ensure it’s fully charged and tested before re-launching.

Protect Against Moisture:  To prevent mould, mildew, and corrosion, safeguard your boat from excess moisture during storage. Use moisture-absorbing products like desiccants or dehumidifiers inside the boat to help control humidity levels. Additionally, cover the boat with a breathable, weather-resistant cover to shield it from dust, or rain and other harsh elements if it’s been stored outside.

Store in a Suitable Location:  Choose a suitable location for storing your boat during the winter months. Storing your boat in a secure, undercover storage space is ideal, as it provides a higher level of security and better protection from inclement weather.

Perform Regular Maintenance:  Finally, while your boat is in storage, don’t neglect regular maintenance checks. Ensure she remains in great condition and inspect the cover for any tears or damage and repair as needed. If possible, start the engine occasionally to circulate fluids and prevent corrosion build-up.

Preparing your boat for winter is vital to safeguard your investment and prepare it for the upcoming boating season. By adhering to these useful tips, you can maintain its condition and prolong its lifespan, ensuring countless adventures on our glorious waterways for years to come.
