30th Anniversary Video Series

Watch our 30th Anniversary video series with interviews, insights and tales from some of the most influential people in the self storage industry:

Joining Kennards Self Storage in 1991, after completing a Bachelor of Business (Land Economics) at Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Sam was later appointed to the position of Managing Director in late 1994, taking over from his father Neville Kennard (who attempted retirement).

Since 1991, he has worked in a number of customer-facing roles in the business, as well as Operations, Marketing, Construction, Finance, Property Acquisitions and Development.

With over two decades leading the company and growing from 12 centres in 1994 to 90 centres and 270 people across Australia and New Zealand today, he has accumulated extensive experience in the business, property sector and self storage industry.

While the focus and key strength has been undertaking new self storage development, his career also includes large scale acquisitions and mergers of multi-site self storage groups, most notably the $220 million acquisition of Millers Self Storage in 2004. This more than doubled the size of the business.

In 2007, he negotiated and acquired the companies first significant trans-Tasman investment, acquiring 8 operating self storage centres in New Zealand.

In addition, he has arranged and negotiated significant debt funding and been instrumental in educating Australian lenders about the attributes and characteristics of self storage. This has lead to better appreciation of the asset class and improved access to finance for the sector.

Sam has also served on the National Committee of the Self Storage Association of Australasia and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also on the Board of The Centre for Independent Studies. In 2018, he was invited to join the Advisory Board of Advance Australia.

He is a regular contributor to self storage and property journals, particularly Mini Storage Messenger; Inside Self Storage and The Insider.
